Oh, how we worked hard to make that kite. Had to find just the right sticks, make the tail, not too long though... it won't fly. Oh, she was a beaut, best lookin' brown paper bag kite ever seen. We even wrote our names on it. We were proud... Now, time to get it in the air!

So, off to the field we went. We ran, adjusted, ran some more... adjusted some more, and finally, in the air she went. Oh, how high she flew... I guess about twenty feet or so. Doesn't sound like much, but it was amazing to see it was in the air... our Kite was actually flying! So after a few more adjustments on the tail... we discovered it had too many bows in it, and replacing both sticks, they broke when it hit the ground too many times. My brothers, my dad and myself finally got to see our kite soar to heights never before seen by three young boys. It flew the length of the whole spool of string. Dad said it was about 150 feet. It was so cool! We took our turns in the pilot's seat flying it and watching it and when it came time for each of us at the second rotation, we apparently had worn the string out. It broke and away she flew. My brothers and I, of course were disappointed, but we periodically talk about it, laugh and remember what fun it was. Then we toss around the slim dream possibility that someone in a foreign country my have found it... we never saw it again and we couldn't find it. So, it had to have flown around the world. Now, that's a memory.

You don't see many Kite Flyers around these days. I think people just don't realize the fun it really is. Kite flying is a very inexpensive way to really enjoy an afternoon with the family and create memories that you simply cannot create in other ways. It causes excitement, wonder, closeness, and at time downright bewilderment as to how that thing can fly with just a string. Then, when we get older, those memories are precious. No amount of TV time can create that for anyone.

So, if your looking for some inexpensive fun that will really create lasting memories, get a kite and work like crazy to get it in the air. You'll be amazed at how fast the time flies and how much fun it is... even if the silly string breaks
